The King Dinuzulu Innovation Valley (KDIV) is a pioneering initiative to transform KwaZulu-Natal into a continental leader in technology, trade, and innovation. We help build the digital infrastructure, skills, and entrepreneurial ecosystems required for modern economic growth.

The Problem
The innovation landscape in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond is often fragmented and ineffective. We identified a core problem: siloed innovation, a lack of local context in tech development, and significant difficulty for startups and established companies to scale from idea to product. This creates a fragmented and often ineffective innovation ecosystem.

Our Approach

Our approach was a holistic process that blended strategic design with a deep understanding of the local context.

• Ecosystem Mapping: We applied Ecosystem Mapping to identify and understand all key players, from government and academia to startups and investors. This allowed us to co-create a shared vision and a governance framework for the initiative.
• Human-Centred Design: We used Design Thinking to ensure the hub’s resources and programs are tailored to the real needs of local entrepreneurs and businesses, ensuring high adoption and long-term sustainability.
• Brand Development: We led the development of KDIV’s brand, website, and social media strategy, creating a modern, dynamic identity that balances futuristic digital elements with a strong human-centred narrative.
• Innovation Hub Design: We were instrumental in designing the physical and digital infrastructure for the hub, including an incubator program to help citizens turn their ideas into investment-ready concepts. We also helped establish an eGovernment Centre of Excellence to drive the adoption of new technologies for improved service delivery.
