Phemba
Green energy rollout and skills training program

Energy
Rollout
A large-scale green energy rollout and skills training program, positioning regions as leaders in renewable energy and manufacturing.
The Problem
Africa, despite its immense potential, faces critical challenges in energy accessibility and reliability. Many countries have outdated or poorly maintained energy infrastructure, resulting in frequent power outages and an unstable energy supply. This issue is exacerbated by an unsustainable reliance on fossil fuels, which hinders economic growth and perpetuates social inequality. The challenge is to lead a just green energy transition that democratizes access to power through renewable solutions.
Our Approach
Our approach is a multi-pronged process that combines strategic design with a deep commitment to sustainable infrastructure.
- Systems Thinking: We applied Systems Thinking to design a resilient energy grid that considers all stakeholders, from rural communities to major industrial users.
- Infrastructure Design: We are contributing to the deployment of 100-200 MW of grid-connected clean energy, with a scalable plan to reach 1 GW across KwaZulu-Natal by 2030. This includes utility-scale solar farms and public/residential solar deployment.
- Capacity Building: We are helping to build the local capacity needed for a sustainable energy future by creating training programs for new job opportunities in green sectors. Our work on Phemba Africa is directly linked to other initiatives like KDIV, which helps us provide specialized skills training in renewable energy assembly and manufacturing.
- Digital Transformation: We designed a user-centric website and established a comprehensive go-to-market strategy to effectively communicate Phemba Africa's unique offerings and build trust with potential clients.
For this initiative, we applied a comprehensive suite of our core services, including:
- Capacity Building
- Infrastructure & Energy Design
- Systems Design
- Governance & Compliance

Just Energy
Transition
We are a key partner in this initiative, contributing to the deployment of clean energy and the development of local capacity for a sustainable future.
The Impact
Phemba Africa represents a significant commitment to sustainable utilities rollout, with 100 MW of renewable energy already under development. This initiative is creating new job opportunities, improving public sector resilience, and establishing KwaZulu-Natal as a national leader in a just green energy transition. The next steps involve expanding renewable corridors, deepening public sector partnerships, and continuing to advise on policy to support this transformative work.
Our Vision
Our vision for Phemba Africa is to deploy resilient renewable grids and develop the local human capital needed to support a green energy future. We see this initiative transforming regions into leaders in renewable energy infrastructure and manufacturing, ensuring that power is not only clean but also reliable, inclusive, and a driver of new economic opportunity.
