In Women

KZNWAF addresses systemic financial and market access barriers for women-led businesses.

The Problem
Women entrepreneurs in Africa face significant systemic barriers, including limited access to capital, mentorship, and formal markets. This financial exclusion stunts economic growth and perpetuates inequality. The KZNWAF was created to address these pressing issues, but the core challenge was to design a human-centered system that could efficiently process thousands of applications and provide structured, tailored support to foster the growth of diverse women-led businesses.

Our Approach

Our approach was a rigorous Human-Centered Design process, including grassroots research and citizen journey mapping, to deeply understand the needs of women entrepreneurs. We designed and operationalized the KZNWAF Cooperative Incubation Engine, a transformative model for economic revitalization.

  • Digital Transformation: We built a dual-channel application system (physical and digital) with AI-enhanced data capture to ensure broad and inclusive participation. Our system efficiently processed over 3,000 applications.
  • Economic Development: We developed a standardized rubric to ensure equitable selection and applied a unique tagging system to provide tailored support for each entrepreneur.
  • Capacity Building: Through the Incubation Engine, we provided comprehensive support from legal registration and governance workshops to skills labs and capacity-building sessions. This equipped women with the tools to build their own businesses and gain valuable skills for the job market.
  • Ecosystem Activation: We acted as a key partner in mobilizing resources and connecting women entrepreneurs to funding, training, and markets. We also leveraged our other initiatives, such as KDIV and Greenfields, to create pathways for employment and entrepreneurial growth.

For this initiative, we applied a comprehensive suite of our core services, including:

  • Socio-Economic Development
  • Research & Analysis
  • Digital Transformation
  • Ecosystem Development
  • Civic Service Design
  • Capacity Building

Blueprint for

Capacity building

We serve as a key implementation partner, designing a scalable model to provide financial support, mentorship, and business development services.

Our Vision

Our vision for the KZNWAF was to create an accessible, dual physical-digital system to process applications and ensure no one was left behind, regardless of their technological literacy. We envisioned a multi-billion-rand investment fund with a comprehensive support system that would transform fragmented micro-enterprises into formally registered, income-generating economic engines.

The Impact
Our work enabled systemic transformation, supporting over 2,900 women entrepreneurs and turning fragmented micro-enterprises into formalized, income-generating cooperatives. Our data-driven approach revealed that the majority of participants were early-stage entrepreneurs, with a significant concentration in the agriculture sector, directly informing the program's design and ensuring its success. The KZNWAF serves as a proven blueprint for empowering women-led businesses and fostering inclusive economic growth.
